Jugaad – principles of cheap and intelligent innovation with limited resources

(with Wikipedia extracts)

Jugaad is also a colloquial Hindi word that can mean an innovative fix or a simple work-around, sometimes pejoratively used for solutions that bend rules, or a resource that can be used as such, or a person who can solve a complicated issue. It is used as much to describe enterprising street mechanics as for political fixers. This meaning is often used to signify creativity to make existing things work or to create new things with meagre resources.

The jugaad concept can be contrasted with the Western (originally American) concept of a hack or kludge. Although in its general meaning “hack” is very similar to “jugaad”, a jugaad can be thought of more as a survival tactic, whereas a hack, especially nowadays, is seen an intellectual art form. Both concepts express a need to do what needs to be done, without regard to what is conventionally supposed to be possible.

Jugaad is increasingly being accepted as a management technique and is recognized all over the world as an acceptable form of frugal engineering pioneered in India. Companies in India are adopting Jugaad as a practise to reduce research and development costs. Jugaad also applies to any kind of creative and out of the box thinking which maximizes resources for a company and its stakeholders.

Jugaad Technology has 6 very effective principles mention in book Jugaad Innovation.

1) Find difficult situations and adverse circumstances as opportunities

The basics of “alchemy”, transforming problems and difficult situations into value, liabilities into assets.

Therefore we need a non-judgemental scope on liabilities, looking at them systematically as “sleeping, unveiled value”.

2) Use least amount of material and resources to increase one’s capability.

This true intelligence. It asks collaborative qualities, openness, humility. Ego and conditioning is an obstacle to this optimalization.

3) One must be able to maneuver one’s thoughts and thinking pattern. One must be able to think out of box and therefore, one must be open to accepting and evaluating new ideas and thoughts.

This is about prefrontal creativity. Accepting to question belief patterns and existing limits.

4) Be simple

Asks a lot of intelligence. Being able to surf through complexity and diversity of resourcxes, to end up with something very simple and straightforward.

5) Include the margin

Important innovation happens – most of the time – at the margin of the mainstream business. At the limit of the box and the out-of-the-box. Margin means connexion with marginal stakeholders, social issues, crazy visionaries, simple minds. CSR and social entrepreneurs apply it. Check out what core-business innovation it can trigger.

6) Follow your heart

Emotional intelligence, activating intuition, collective intelligence. Follow passionated people, because the energy is there.

Link with “Resources Systemics”:

It’s not about doing more with less as Jugaad we suggest, but doing more with more, as with Resources Systemics. If we are able to create a fertile space for genuine collaboration for common good with stakeholders, new resources can be activated to contribute to the project. Get the jugaad intelligence combined with systemic innovation: that’s where the key is !
